Lafayette Ballet Company is a small pre-professional group of committed young dancers. We concentrate on teamwork, performance integrity, and enhancing classroom skills with challenging new works, traditional repertoire and pieces tailored to showcase the talents of our current dancers. For 30 years pre-pandemic we had an annual full length Nutcracker. Now with smaller numbers of dancers and volunteers, we concentrate our performances to the Lafayette Ballet Ballroom, where the intimacy and vibrancy of chamber performance gives the audience a rich experience. The future is uncertain in the arts. Fewer people are willing to commit to the schedule of training and involvement. We nurture the talents and aspirations of those who do. Lafayette Ballet is a registered Not-For-Profit 501(c)3 organization in the State of Indiana.

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE:

The Ice Queen is an original ballet based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of the Snow Queen. This is the longest fairy tale written by Andersen so we have selected a small protion of the action. Our music is from Nordic composers of the 19th Century, most promininently, Edvard Grieg.

Act I : (running time 35 minutes)

Scene 1. In a small village live the sisters Gerda and Kaija. Although all seems peaceful, the village has been targeted by the Snow Queen to recruit a new Ice Maiden for her Kingdom. She selects the moody and shy younger sister, Kaija. Kaija is enchanted by the magic mirror, whose shards pierce her heart when it is broken. Although Gerda fights the Ice Queen, Kaija is kidnapped and Gerda is left to her grief.

Scene 2. The rose which Gerda has given to Kaija comes alive. The Rose and Gerda embark on a journey to find her little sister. They arrive finally at an island belonging to the sorceress Borghild. Borghild has a forest of trees, in need of care and love to live, but because she is a selfish being, she cannot sustain them. She tries to draw Gerda into staying and caring for her trees, but Gerda and the Rose escape and continue their search.

Act II : (running time 30 minutes)
Scene 1. The Kingdom of Ice: The Ice Queen rules with power and control. Keija is engaged in her group, but separated by her confusion and her assigned task of assembling the pieces of the broken mirror. Gerda and the Rose come to battle with the Ice Queen for her sister. Gerda manages to pull the ice shard from Kaija's heart. Kaija, returned to herself, realizes that this is what also ails the Ice Queen. She has a heart of ice. So Gerda bravely extracts the crystal from the heart of the Ice Queen and the Queen melts to the ground.

Scene 2. The Ice Kingdom begins to melt, and the maidens begin to abandon their ice wands. The Queen awakens and the kingdom begins to become green, as though spring has arrived. The gnomes and trolls crown her the Green Queen and she gladly welcomes both Gerda and Kaija to a blossoming world.
We hope to see you at the performance, and that you keep a winter evening for family live entertainment and the celebration of our talented dancers and the mission that they share of beauty, humor, musicality and integrity. You must reserve ahead as there is limited seating. Reservations for each performance are limited to 5 per person and will be closed when we reach our seating capacity.

A word about downtown parking. There is actually a fair amount of parking downtown, but the most obvious spots close to 226 N 6th Street are often taken in the evening for restaurants, theatre events, and residents. Please check the map and locate some reasonable places so you don't get caught driving in circles and arrive late.
